When NOT to Get a Tarot Reading
We all know how powerful, wonderful and supportive tarot can be. However, we do have to be careful when using a tool that is so powerful. It’s like anything in life – you have to be careful about excess.
Tarot can help guide you and support you through pretty much any situation that you will face in life but I do believe that there are some situations where it’s best to step away from the deck for a bit. Here is my list of when you should NOT get a tarot reading.
When you are Highly Emotional
The problem with reading tarot get having a tarot reading done, when you are highly emotional, is that you won’t be able to separate yourself from the situation and see the big picture.
Perhaps you are in deep despair due to a break-up. Of course, these are the times that we want our tarot cards to support us. I’m not saying that you shouldn’t use tarot when you have been through a break-up but you shouldn’t use it when you are at an extremely low point.
Maybe you have just had a massive fight with a family member or friend. I would suggest that you sleep on it, let the dust settle a bit then reach for your cards.
Just wait until some of those emotions have passed, take a few deep breaths then let the tarot do its work. There is always hope to be found in the cards.
When you are Seeking a Particular Answer
If you absolutely know that answer that you are looking for then I would question if there is any point to having a reading. The problem with this is that you just won’t be open to the alternatives and won’t take no for an answer.
Be sure that you are nice and open when having a tarot reading. Sometimes stuff will come up that we really don’t want to hear but it can be necessary.
My other point on this matter is – if you already know that answer and your intuition is screaming at you then why do you need the reading? Tarot is there to confirm what we already know but if you absolutely know what action you should take, I would suggest that you go for it!
You Want a Second, Third of Fourth Opinion
Have you ever done a reading for yourself and decided that you really don’t like the outcome so you decide to ask the question again? I reckon we have all been there. I would say that asking the same question over and over again is a big no-no. In fact, when I have done it I feel that the cards have almost been laughing at me and not given me any clarity at all!
As previously mentioned, sometimes we don’t get the answers that we are seeking. You have to remember that you are the one in control of your destiny so you have the power to change the ending.
Don’t get caught in that trap of trying to find the answer you want. As a side note, please don’t keep drawing clarifying cards until you see the outcome that you want.
It’s far more powerful to acknowledge the outcome, see if it’s right for you then take action. Remember that tarot is your GPS and will show you the road to your highest potential if you allow it to do so.
Intuition is Saying No
This is a bit of a tricky one as it’s more of a feeling. Sometimes I just get a sense that I am not supposed to know something right now. I think that we need to pay attention to these feelings or signs.
Maybe you just feel that the tarot reader is not the right person for you.
Occasionally when reading for myself I will go to ask the question but something deep down tells me that I shouldn’t be asking that right now. It doesn’t happen very often but I thought it was worth including as I am a big advocate for following your intuition.
When it’s Too Soon
This ties in with the ‘when you are too emotional’ part. Life is most definitely cyclical but through that, we can have some amazing highs but some very low lows.
We will all face some low points at some point in our lives. Again, I would say that tarot can be a huge supporter. However, sometimes you need to put a bit of space between you and the situation. If you have recently lost somebody that you love, it can be very tempting to reach for the tarot or have a psychic reading to try to bring some comfort. It’s important that we go through the whole grief process and tarot can indeed play it’s part in the process when managed carefully. Tarot can help you through but you need to remember that it is not there to bypass grief.

When You Can’t Make a Decision Without Tarot
Hold up! Hold up! Stop right there. I want to emphasise that you are the master of your own destiny. This quote comes to mind:
“Tarot is a good servant but a bad master”
Tarot can guide you in many ways but do remember that it is there to support. You are the one who ultimately makes the decision. You should hold yourself accountable.
I often say that tarot can be like a best friend who will guide, support and always be there for you, however, will sometimes tell you things that you don’t want to hear or even admit to yourself.
Tarot will always have your back and will stay with you through thick and thin. If you respect that relationship and don’t take advantage there is no reason that you won’t be friends for life.
