Tarot Spread: Motivation

I have to be honest, I have been struggling a bit with motivation recently.  One of the things I love about tarot is that I always have a tool to turn to whenever I hit a hurdle in life.  Don’t get me wrong, I’m not having major issues, but I believe that tarot can and perhaps should be incorporated into every day life so we can reach our potential.

Sometimes we just get really busy and it can be hard to prioritise or even know where to start.  I have a tendency to have a million ideas but get a bit stuck when it comes to the doing.  It sometimes feels like I have a mountain to climb to get to where I want to be so I end up stuck and not moving forward.

Bird By Bird

I haven’t read it myself but I was told about this book – Bird by Bird It’s actually a book about writing but this story really jumped out at me…

“Thirty years ago my older brother, who was ten years old at the time, was trying to get a report on birds written that he’d had three months to write. It was due the next day. We were out at our family cabin in Bolinas, and he was at the kitchen table close to tears, surrounded by binder paper and pencils and unopened books on birds, immobilized by the hugeness of the task ahead. Then my father sat down beside him, put his arm around my  brother’s shoulder, and said, ‘Bird by bird, buddy.  Just take it bird by bird.'”

Goal Setting

I got to thinking that motivation is very much aligned to goal setting.  You can download my free goal setting guide here.

I talk about breaking down the goal into bite sized chunks so it then becomes a plan.  Motivation is exactly the same.

Instead of looking at the big task at hand and getting overwhelmed, we need to break it down into small achievable tasks and most importantly, we just need to start!

It’s amazing what can happen once you make a start.

Whenever I feel stuck, I rely on my trusted tarot deck to help get me over the hump.  This time was no different.  I decided to create a motivation tarot spread and here are the details.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Case Study

I think it always helps to see a live version of any tarot spread so I pulled these cards to get some insight for myself.

This first action I need to take is The World.  This is simply telling me that it’s time for a fresh start. I need to put the past behind me and accept that I am ready for a new chapter.  I should stop holding on and accept what is done is done.  It’s really saying to me that it’s time to move and continue on the cycle of life.

The Wheel of Fortune is another card which shows life’s cycles.  This is saying to me to ride the waves of whatever comes my way.  I always see the wheel as a positive card so again it’s telling me to start and move and I may just be surprised with what comes my way.

The third thing I need to do is 10 of Wands (reversed).  This is saying that I should not be a hero and try to do everything myself. I need to lay down the load and get some help. With it being reversed it is showing me that things are about to get easier.  This is a great motivator for me as I know that I will be ok and I will be able to get on top of things.

Together these cards are all really pushing me to move forward.

The 2 of Pentacles is holding me back.  I’m potentially trying to juggle too many things at the same time.  This is very apt as I am currently working full time, running a tarot business on the side, looking after my brand new puppy and looking to buy a property.  Easy right?  I do like to keep myself busy but I need to focus and prioritise.

What can help?  The Queen of Cups.  This is loud and clear to me.  My great friend Jennie is my Queen of Cups. Whenever I do a reading for her she pops up as the Queen of Cups and it very much relates to how I view her.  This is telling me that I need her help or at least advice to get me through to the next stage.

If I wait, it won’t be a disaster, but the Knight of Pentacles is very stagnant.  He doesn’t move much but he is doing a lot of planning.  This is saying to me that I could get stuck in planning mode and never move forward at all.

The Ace of Swords is telling me that these ideas will keep coming and I should have the focus and will power to complete them one at a time.  The key here is one at a time. If I try to do too much at once it will all come falling down.

It’s really interesting that the 4 of Cups (reversed) comes up.  When writing this post I was thinking of using the 4 of Cups as the cover photo.  This is a real card about lack of motivation and being stuck.  With this being reversed it’s showing me that the time for sitting around is over.  It’s about action and getting the passion back for what I believe in.

Overall I am happy with this reading and it’s given me the boost that I need to help me move forward.
