A Step By Step Guide To How I Grew My Tarot Business
Tarot Avenue is 6 months old!!!! What a ride it’s been. First of all I want to say a big thank you to my tarot supporters and followers on social media. In a relatively short period of time I’ve built up a really lovely tarot tribe who I very much appreciate.
The support and feedback that you guys have been giving me has really encouraged me to keep going.
Before I get into it I want to say a big thank you to friends who have been super supportive and helped me get to where I am – Jennie, Sandy, Pat, Ben and Eleanor – you guys rock and you are very much appreciated.
I want to share some of the highlights over the last 6 months and also share some of the tools I have used to help me launch and grow my business. I’m throwing in a few hints and tips as I am hoping that this post will inspire others to take the leap like I did.
At the end of this post I’ve included a chance for you to download my FREE resource guide, so you have access to all the tools I use in one simple PDF.
Website
This was a huge first step for me. I had very minimal experience with WordPress but I threw myself into it and pretty much did it all from scratch. I had some help with the copy from my lovely and talented friend Jennie.
Top Tip: Start your blog on wordpress.org rather than wordpress.com. I started on wordpress.com but quickly realised the limitations so I transferred it over. It would have saved a bit of a headache if I had started on .org.
It would be ideal to pay a designer and web developer to build my site but as I am just starting I didn’t want to invest $$$$ until I knew it was going to be a success. I’m hoping that around the 1 year mark I will be able to have a re-brand and get the website that I have dreamed of but I’m pretty content with what I have for now.
Logo
You could pay a designer hundreds of $$$ to come up with your brand and logo. There is absolutely value in using a professional but I just didn’t have the budget at the beginning. I got my logo designed on www.fiverr.com The designers on here are a bit hit and miss but at $5 you really can’t complain. I think I tried about 4 or 5 different designers but I’m really happy with the result.
Top Tip: There are plenty of alternatives to using really expensive designers. Try www.fiverr.com, freelancer.com or 99designs.com
Marketing Collateral
I can’t imagine how I would be able to do what I am doing without www.canva.com. This is a free tool that’s really simple to use and let’s you create images for your website, social media or even printed marketing collateral. Here are a few samples of what I have created in Canva.
Top Tip: Sign up for www.canva.com and start practicing. This tool is a blogger’s best friend.
Social Media
I’ve had a lot of fun on social media and met some lovely people. I am finding the majority of my success through Instagram and Facebook but I’m struggling to get into Twitter. I think there is just a bit too much noise on Twitter for me. I’ve also just signed up for Snapchat (tarotavenue) so why don’t you join me and message me?
I’m still building my audience on both Facebook and Instagram. I post a ‘thought for the day’ every day. I tend to draw the cards for the week on a Sunday then schedule them through Hootsuite. This saves a bit of time and it means that I can do it in one go.
I’ve had a lot of success reaching a new audience through Facebook Live. I’ve written a comprehensive step by step guide on how to use Facebook Live which you can access here.
I also use social media to amplify my blog. If I have written a blog post I will take a snippet and create a graphic through Canva to try to draw people back to the blog. You can see an example of this from my monthly tarotscope.
Blogging
This has been the most interesting part for me as every time I write a post I’m learning something new. I find that my tarotscope is a very popular ongoing post and I also created a 6 month forecast for each zodiac sign (in Canva of course). You can download it here….

Building Relationships
If you want your business to take off it’s absolutely crucial that you build relationships with other successful online entrepreneurs. I’m still working on this but I have had a lot of support from the tarot community, especially Brigit Esselmont from Biddy Tarot and Theresa Reed aka The Tarot Lady. These generous superstars have shared some of my blog pieces, which as a result saw me get over 1K new visitors in just 24 hours! That blew my mind!
I’m a member of Biddy Tarot Community and as a result I have been featured on Brigit’s Podcast and Blog, which again saw a huge spike in traffic for me.
Top Tip: Try to network with people you admire and respect. It’s not about being super creepy and stalking them. Have a think about what you can do to help them and you will usually find that they will be happy to return the favour.
Content Upgrades
All the podcasts I listened to kept talking about how you really need to build your email list. I found that I was gaining traction with my traffic but my little ‘pop up’ linked to MailChimp was not really converting people into subscribers.
I then heard a podcast about content upgrades and it all started to come together for me. A content upgrade is something that you offer for free in exchange for an email address. I find that it’s best to offer something at the end of a blog post that is going to take that post to the next level. You can see examples of this in my Top Tarot Tips and my tarotscopes posts. It can be a bit of work to put this information together but it’s definitely worth it. My business totally changed when I started doing this.
I started doing this through MailChimp but it’s actually a bit tricky as you have to create different forms etc. It can be done but it’s not my preferred method. I was recommended ConvertKit which has been brilliant. It does cost about $30 per month but it’s a great tool. You can create these content upgrades easily then you can create a series of emails that your subscribers will automatically get so they get to know you (I haven’t done this yet but it’s on my list).
This is a prime example of a content upgrade….

Top Tip: Look into ConvertKit. If you can afford it then get it as it makes your life a whole lot easier.
Online Tarot Readings
Since launching the blog I have been doing tarot readings for people all over the world. It’s been quite amazing and I have met some lovely people. I’m still growing this side of my business but things are going well so far. I need to do some work on my readings page but I was using ECwid as my e-commerce option. However, since starting my candle range I’ve been working with Shopify, which has been excellent. I’m going to change my readings page over to Shopify but again it’s something on my list.
Top Tip: If you have a WordPress blog you can sign up for Shopify Lite which allows you to post a buy now button on your site. It’s only $9 per month and very simple to use. My CANDLE PAGE is done in this way.
Candle Launch
This took a bit of time for me to get off the ground but since starting my tarot reading I found that I was constantly giving advice that people need to focus their intention and take the time to meditate. I know that everybody loves a soy candle and many people like to meditate with a tarot card so I thought I would combine both. The candles are there as tools for my clients to use to help them set their intention and take the time to work out what they really want in their lives.
I spent a long time learning how to make candles then testing, testing and testing. I also employed a designer to create the labels and I had them printed in China. I’m very happy with the result and the feedback has been excellent. I hope you like them.
Top Tip: Think beyond just online tarot readings. What other products could you create? Maybe physical or maybe online?
What’s next?
As I am typing this I’m actually amazed at how much I have been able to achieve in 6 months, whilst holding a full time job. It just goes to show if you find something that you really love then you will find the time to make your dreams come true.
I have a lot of plans for the future. Here is a little snippet of things to come in the next 6 months:
Online Course: I’m being guided to create an online course but I’m still figuring out exactly what it’s going to look like. I think I’m going to combine my HR and recruitment background with my tarot knowledge and create a course to help people find their dream job. It will be a mix of tarot guiding the way, along with practical advice on CV preparation, interview preparation etc. I’m quite excited about it.
Podcast: I’ve fallen in love with podcasts so it’s a natural evolution for me. I think this is going to be around the 1 year mark so I can share my stories and hopefully interview amazing guests.
Blogging: I want to continue to write engaging content that is going to help me grow my audience. I love making positive change in people’s lives and blogging is a great way to make that happen.
Meditations: I’m working on creating meditations to go along with the candles. These will be designed to take you deeper within to find the answers you are looking for. It’s also a really good way to get to know the tarot cards on a deeper level.
Candles: I’ve just launched the candles so it’s important that I keep spreading the news about these. My aim is to get them stocked in a few metaphysical shops and I am also hoping to sell them at markets in Sydney.
As you can see there is quite a bit for me to focus my attention on. I am loving what I am doing and really appreciate you giving me your eyeballs! I always appreciate feedback so feel free to email me david@tarotavenue.com with any requests for blog posts or just to say hi.
As promised I’ve put all of the resources that I have used to grow my business, along with some alternatives, in a handy PDF that you can download for free. Just fill in your details here…
Lots of love
Davidxox

Hi David
I really like your progressive and interesting website. Thank you for sharing.
Just one point. You mention starting a website on WordPress. org, (rather than .com) but I can’t find where .org do any hosting. They quote other hosting sites but nothing of their own. I can only find Website hosting schemes on .com. Have I read your Post wrong?
Best regards
Neil
Hi Niel. I’ve replied to you direct but thought I would write a message here for others to see.
My recommendation is to use WordPress.org but you need to buy hosting. My new and much improved host is Siteground –
There are many hosting options but Siteground offer a good price and I’m impressed with the support and service so far.
Sorry for any confusion.
